По другому определению, ? есть мера систематического риска конкретной свободно торгуемой ценной бумаги, учитывающего корреляцию и волатильность данной ценной бумаги относительно более широкого рынка. Иными словами, beta предназначена для измерения рисковости действий компании на рынке и рисковости отдельной публичной акции в условиях рынка. Бета представляет собой показатель относительной неустойчивости курса данных акций по сравнению с остальным рынком: сводный индекс «500» агентства Стандард энд Пурз имеет «бету» со значением 1. Акция с «бетой» больше 1 — более неустойчива, с «бетой» меньше 1 — более устойчива. Консервативные инвесторы предпочитают акции с низким уровнем «беты». Коэффициент ? является также одним из параметров модели САРМ (См. Модель оценки капитальных активов, САРМ). Коэффициент ? для отдельной акции математически представляет собой коэффициент парной регрессии в уравнении зависимости доходности этой акции от доходности рынка в целом (биржевого индекса). Пример: умножение премии за риск для акции в 7,5% на бету в 1,4 дает надбавку на риск в расчете на одну акцию для сравнимых компаний — 10,5%
